HELPFUL INFORMATION
PAWS has the largest spay/neuter program in the area. This program enables many families to have their pets altered who would otherwise be unable to do so for financial reasons. Consequently, this reduces the number of unwanted animals that are showing up in our already over burdened and over-populated shelters. Thousands of animals are sterilized each year through our program which greatly reduces the number being born and the number being destroyed.
PAWS operates a humane education program that is presented to thousands of students each year from pre-K through high school. The program is calls “PAWS To Learn” and is offered free to schools, libraries, scouts and other civic groups. The New York State mandated curriculum is presented at an age appropriate level to all grades. The core messages of “PAWS To Learn” are:
▪ Promote responsible pet ownership
▪ Teaches respect for all living things
▪ Encourages adoptions from local municipal shelters
▪ Stresses prevention of cruelty to animals
▪ Teaches to spay/neuter to alleviate the tragedy of pet overpopulation
PAWS To Learn promotes kindness and compassion and teaches children that animals have feelings too. The program also stresses that pets can improve the quality of our lives. In addition to slide shows and lectures, dogs and cats that have been rescued from shelters are brought into the classroom to interact with the students. This is usually the highlight of the program for the kids and it serves to reinforce the message of kindness and understand.
If you would like more information or would like to schedule a presentation for your school or civic group, please call Janet at 516-364-2284.
