Humane Education Program
PAWS operates a humane education program that is presented to thousands of students each year from
pre-K through High School. The program is called "PAWS To Learn" and is offered free to schools, libraries, scouts and other civic groups. The New York State mandated curriculum is presented at an age appropriate level to all grades. The core messages of "PAWS To Learn" are:
Promotes responsible pet ownership
Teaches respect for all living things
Encourages adoptions from local municipal shelters
Stresses prevention of cruelty to animals
Fosters Spay / Neuter program to alleviate the tragedy of pet overpopulation
PAWS To Learn promotes kindness and compassion and teaches children that animals have feelings too. The program also stresses that pets can improve the quality of our lives, as research studies have repeatedly shown. In addition to slide shows and lectures, dogs that have been rescued from shelters are brought into the classroom to interact with the students. This is usually the highlight of the program for the kids and it serves to reinforce the message of kindness and understanding.
